Asphalting

About Asphalting

As part of our ongoing road maintenance program, your road may be identified as requiring a new surface due to various defects and safety concerns. This work will involve removing the existing surface and laying a brand new layer of Asphalt.

What is Asphalting?

Asphalting is where we cover the road with a sticky bitumen – asphalt is a semi-solid liquid with added binders and fillers which dries to form a hardened road surface.

Asphalt is able to be laid quickly and efficiently, lessening the length of roadworks and providing a smooth and sturdy surface. Asphalt is best used for roads that have a high volume of traffic or areas with high turning stress such as cul-de-sacs.

What should I expect during the work?

You can anticipate feeling a degree of vibration from the heavy machinery involved in road resurfacing and you will likely hear a high level of vehicle-reversing warning ‘beeps’.

We’re aware that this sound will ‘carry’ and we apologise in advance for this temporary noise nuisance.

Access may be temporarily affected due to the operations being undertaken. Please cooperate with our traffic control staff when needing access in and out of your property – and park away from the street.

If our works fall on your allocated rubbish day, please take your bin out as normal.

How can I keep myself and my belongings safe during this time?

Asphalt is very hot and “sticky” in its early life and you should be very careful to avoid contact with your shoes.

Check your shoes before walking indoors. If required, bitumen can be effectively removed from surfaces by using turpentine or kerosene.

Children are attracted to resurfacing work. For their own safety please ensure they stand well back from the work sites.
